Scooter hire in East Ham

East Ham service area
Scooter hire for riders in East Ham
East Ham is in the London Borough of Newham, centred around the E6 postcode. It sits at the eastern edge of Newham, bordering Barking to the east and connecting west through Plaistow and Forest Gate toward Stratford. ShiftLease serves riders based across East Ham and the wider Newham borough from our East London yard.
Hiring a 125cc scooter weekly is a practical alternative to purchasing one outright — especially for riders starting out in delivery work or those who want to avoid committing a large sum to a bike that will accumulate high mileage quickly. The weekly structure keeps the commitment short and exits straightforward after the initial period.
There is no ShiftLease branch or drop-in point in East Ham. We collect and return remotely from a secure gated East London yard, with approved riders receiving the gate pin and lockbox codes. The lack of a staffed location is intentional — it keeps costs down and removes the need to work around office hours.
Both the £50/week own-insurance plan and the fully inclusive plan from £125/week are available to East Ham and Newham riders. All plans include GPS tracking, road tax and MOT. No setup or admin fee on either plan. The £250 deposit is returned at the end of the rental.
Delivery work
Delivery riding around East Ham
East Ham's delivery marketplace includes food, grocery and convenience work rather than relying only on takeaway restaurants. The High Street North corridor generates restaurant and takeaway orders from a concentrated stretch of businesses, while the surrounding residential streets of E6 and neighbouring postcodes add volume from grocery and convenience delivery — a distinct part of the Newham delivery mix.
Beyond the immediate High Street, Beckton to the south brings a different delivery character entirely — large supermarkets and major retailers at Beckton Triangle and Beckton Gateway generate grocery and big-brand delivery separate from the restaurant-focused High Street cluster. A 125cc scooter lets riders move between these two types of demand without being restricted to one zone.
Upton Park and Green Street to the west, Plaistow to the northwest, and Forest Gate to the north each have their own commercial strips with food and convenience delivery activity. Working Newham as a whole area is more efficient than staying within a single postcode, and the borough's east–west geography is practical on a 125cc.
You don't need an active Deliveroo, Uber Eats or Just Eat account to apply for a scooter. Riders frequently complete platform onboarding while the scooter is already collected. What must be in place before the first paid shift is appropriate Hire & Reward insurance — standard SD&P motorcycle cover does not cover paid delivery work, and platforms require proof before you go live.

Local context
Working around East Ham High Street
High Street North is East Ham's main commercial artery, running south from the A124 through the town centre toward Upton Park. It's one of the busiest High Streets in East London — a dense, continuous stretch of restaurants, takeaways, grocery shops, supermarkets, convenience stores and services. The concentration here is notably higher than in a typical suburban High Street; the variety of food businesses alone means riders working this corridor have multiple pickup types available in a short stretch.
East Ham station sits partway along the High Street, making the area a natural reference point for both locals and riders. The blocks immediately around the station — and the side streets running off High Street North — extend the commercial footprint further into E6.
South Newham Road, Plashet Grove and the streets between the High Street and Barking Road add residential depth to the delivery picture. Riders working East Ham often extend into these streets alongside the High Street corridor, rather than concentrating only at the busiest stretch.
East Ham also connects naturally to Upton Park and Green Street to the west — another busy commercial strip anchored around Queens Market and the surrounding food and retail businesses. For a rider covering the E6 and E13 postcodes, this creates a continuous band of delivery-relevant commercial activity running east–west across southern Newham.
Beckton
From East Ham to Beckton
Beckton sits south of East Ham, on the other side of the A13. Its character is different from the High Street North corridor — rather than a continuous urban High Street, Beckton's commercial areas are centred on large out-of-town retail parks. Beckton Triangle and Beckton Gateway are the two main clusters, positioned around the A13/A406/A1020 junctions, and between them include major supermarkets, food operators and large convenience brands.
This retail park format generates delivery differently to a High Street. Grocery and convenience delivery tends to dominate over restaurant orders, and the routes involve moving between park locations and the surrounding residential areas of E6 rather than working a tight High Street strip. A rider who understands both environments — High Street North and the Beckton retail area — can cover Newham's varied delivery geography more fully.
Beckton is also notable for road access. The A13 runs through here directly, giving riders quick connections eastward toward Barking and Dagenham or westward toward the City. For East Ham riders, Beckton is a short distance south and adds a distinct delivery zone to what's already available on the High Street.
The Jenkins Lane area of Beckton is also where 1 Stop Instruction's Beckton/Newham CBT training centre is located — making it a convenient training base for East Ham riders who still need to complete their CBT before hiring a 125cc. See the CBT section below for more detail.

Hire vs buy
Why rent instead of buying a delivery scooter?
Buying a scooter means taking on everything that comes with ownership — servicing, repairs, insurance shopping and eventual resale. For casual or occasional use that's manageable. For full-time delivery work across an area like East Ham and Newham, where high mileage is the norm, the maintenance responsibility mounts up and the resale value of a hard-worked 125cc declines faster than most buyers expect.
Weekly rental separates the cost of riding from the risk of ownership. Road tax and MOT are covered under the ShiftLease arrangement. Maintenance is handled according to your plan. A mechanical issue during the rental doesn't generate the same unexpected personal cost it would if you owned the bike.
The exit terms matter too. After the 4-week initial minimum, a ShiftLease rental goes rolling weekly. You can end it with 7 days' notice at any point — which is a simpler exit than trying to sell a second-hand, high-mileage delivery scooter with a buyer who will factor in every mile it's done.

Licence & CBT
Need a CBT in Newham?
If you're riding on a provisional motorcycle entitlement, a valid CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) certificate is required before riding a 125cc scooter. CBT covers the basics of safe riding, usually lasts 2 years, and lets eligible riders aged 17+ ride up to 125cc with L-plates. A car licence alone does not cover 125cc riding — CBT is required in addition to it. If you hold a full A or A1 motorcycle licence, CBT is not required.
CBT training in Beckton / Newham
1 Stop Instruction runs CBT motorcycle training from their Beckton/Newham site in the Jenkins Lane area — convenient for East Ham, Plaistow and the surrounding E6 and E13 postcodes. The centre serves commuting and delivery riders specifically, and offers training seven days a week. They also provide higher licence training for riders looking to progress beyond a 125cc CBT.
1 Stop Instruction currently advertises promotional CBT pricing from around £189 — check directly for the latest rate and availability before booking, as promotional prices can change.

Collection
Where do East Ham riders collect their scooter?
East Ham and Newham riders collect from ShiftLease's secure East London yard. There is no East Ham branch — the same yard serves all of our East London service area, and the contactless model means riders from E6 collect with no more friction than riders from any other postcode.
The yard address is withheld until your application is approved and the deposit is paid. If you want to confirm the yard is within practical reach of East Ham before committing to an application, message us on WhatsApp and we'll tell you.
Once approved, the gate pin and lockbox combination are sent to you by text or WhatsApp. You pick up the scooter at whatever time suits you — there is no appointment, no window to fit around, and no one you need to meet. Early morning, late evening or a weekend are all equally available.
Returns are the same — bring the scooter back after your 7 days' notice and leave it with no need to hand it to anyone. The deposit is returned within 7 days of the bike being inspected on return.
