Terms & Conditions

Last updated: June 2026

These terms and conditions govern the hire of scooters and other vehicles from ShiftLease. By submitting an application and paying a deposit, you enter into a binding rental agreement with ShiftLease and confirm you have read and accepted these terms in full.

ShiftLease is a sole trader operation based in East London. Contact: hello@shiftlease.co.uk / 07415 198667.

1. Eligibility

1.1 To rent a vehicle from ShiftLease you must: be aged 21 or over at the time of collection; hold a valid CBT certificate with a provisional UK driving licence, or a full A1 motorcycle licence, that is current and covers the vehicle being rented; not have more than one minor motoring conviction in the three years preceding your application; and have no fault claims on a motor insurance policy in the three years preceding your application.

1.2 You are responsible for ensuring your licence remains valid for the duration of your rental. If your licence is revoked, suspended, or lapses during the rental period you must notify us immediately and cease riding the vehicle.

1.3 You must hold valid Hire and Reward (H&R) insurance on the rented vehicle before collecting it and at all times during the rental period, unless you are on our fully inclusive plan in which case H&R insurance is provided by ShiftLease. Using a vehicle for paid delivery work without valid H&R insurance is illegal under UK law. ShiftLease accepts no liability for any legal consequences arising from a rider operating without appropriate insurance.

2. The rental agreement

2.1 A binding rental agreement is formed when you pay the security deposit and receive written confirmation from ShiftLease.

2.2 The minimum rental period is four consecutive weeks.

2.3 The weekly hire charge is payable in advance by direct debit or agreed payment method on the same day each week. Failure to pay on the due date constitutes a breach of this agreement.

2.4 ShiftLease reserves the right to vary pricing with a minimum of 4 weeks written notice for existing hirers.

2.5 The rental agreement covers the use of one named vehicle. Vehicles may not be sub-let, loaned, or made available to any third party under any circumstances.

3. Security deposit

3.1 A security deposit of £250 is required before collection of any vehicle. The deposit is held as security against damage, outstanding fines, missing equipment, and any unpaid rental fees.

3.2 The deposit is fully refundable provided the vehicle is returned in the same condition as collected, with no outstanding penalty notices, no missing equipment, and no unpaid rental arrears.

3.3 Deductions from the deposit may be made for: damage beyond fair wear and tear, outstanding PCNs or fines at the time of return, missing equipment such as locks or accessories, and any unpaid weekly hire fees.

3.4 The deposit will be returned within 14 days of the vehicle being returned and inspected, subject to clause 3.3.

3.5 The deposit does not limit the hirer's liability — if costs arising from damage, fines, or other breaches exceed the deposit amount, ShiftLease reserves the right to seek recovery of the additional sum.

4. Use of the vehicle

4.1 The vehicle must only be used for lawful purposes. Permitted uses are food delivery and courier work on delivery platforms (Deliveroo, UberEats, JustEat, Stuart, and equivalents) and social, domestic, and pleasure use.

4.2 The vehicle must not be used for: racing, pace-making, off-road riding, or any competition; any use that invalidates the vehicle's insurance policy; carriage of passengers; or travel outside of Greater London and surrounding areas without prior written consent from ShiftLease.

4.3 The hirer is responsible for fuelling the vehicle. The vehicle must be returned with the same fuel level as at collection.

4.4 The hirer must carry out basic safety checks before each use including tyre pressure, lights, and brakes, and must report any defects to ShiftLease immediately.

4.5 The vehicle must be kept secured when not in use using the provided security lock or an equivalent approved device.

5. Fines, penalties, and charges

5.1 All penalty charge notices (PCNs), parking fines, speeding fines, congestion charges, ULEZ charges, bus lane charges, and any other fixed penalty notices or statutory charges incurred during the rental period are the sole responsibility of the hirer.

5.2 When ShiftLease receives a notice addressed to us as the registered keeper, we will transfer liability to the hirer in accordance with Section 172 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. The hirer will receive the notice in their own name and is responsible for paying it or appealing it within the timeframe stated.

5.3 ShiftLease charges an administration fee of £25 per notice received and processed on the hirer's behalf, in addition to the face value of the fine.

5.4 Any outstanding notices at the time of vehicle return must be resolved before the security deposit is refunded.

6. Maintenance and breakdowns

6.1 On the fully inclusive plan, ShiftLease is responsible for all routine maintenance including oil changes, servicing, MOT, and road tax.

6.2 On the standard plan, ShiftLease is responsible for major mechanical maintenance. Consumable items including tyres, brake pads, and bulbs are the hirer's responsibility. Any replacement of consumables must be approved by ShiftLease in advance.

6.3 In the event of a mechanical breakdown, the hirer must contact ShiftLease immediately via WhatsApp or phone. ShiftLease will arrange repair or replacement as quickly as reasonably practicable.

6.4 The hirer must not authorise or carry out any repairs to the vehicle without prior written consent from ShiftLease. Unauthorised repairs may result in deductions from the deposit or additional charges.

6.5 ShiftLease is not liable for any loss of earnings resulting from vehicle downtime, whether due to mechanical failure, maintenance, or any other cause.

7. Accidents and theft

7.1 In the event of an accident, the hirer must: stop and ensure safety; call emergency services if required; notify ShiftLease immediately on the same day by WhatsApp or phone; not admit liability to any third party; obtain the details of any other parties involved; and report the incident to their insurance provider on the same day.

7.2 In the event of theft, the hirer must notify the police immediately and obtain a crime reference number, then notify ShiftLease on the same day.

7.3 The hirer is responsible for the vehicle at all times while it is in their possession. ShiftLease accepts no liability for loss of or damage to the vehicle caused by the hirer's negligence.

8. GPS tracking

8.1 All ShiftLease vehicles are fitted with a GPS tracking device. By entering into a rental agreement, the hirer consents to the vehicle's location being monitored at all times.

8.2 GPS data is used for vehicle recovery in the event of theft, remote diagnostics in the event of breakdown, and verifying compliance with the terms of this agreement.

8.3 ShiftLease reserves the right to remotely immobilise the vehicle in the event of a payment default of 7 or more days, a credible report of theft, or a material breach of these terms. Remote immobilisation will not be used without reasonable cause and we will attempt to contact the hirer before taking this action where possible.

9. Cancellation and early termination

9.1 The minimum rental period is 4 weeks. Cancellation within the first 4 weeks forfeits the security deposit in full.

9.2 After the minimum period, the hirer may terminate the agreement by giving 7 days written notice via email or WhatsApp.

9.3 Where a hirer has been on a 12-month agreement and terminates before completing all 52 weeks, the complimentary final month (weeks 49–52) is forfeited and will not be credited or refunded. ShiftLease reserves the right to apply an early termination fee — the specific fee applicable to your agreement will be set out in your individual rental contract at the time of signing. The security deposit may be retained in whole or in part depending on the circumstances of termination, the condition of the vehicle, and any outstanding obligations.

9.4 ShiftLease reserves the right to terminate the agreement immediately and recover the vehicle without notice in the event of non-payment of hire fees for 7 or more days, a material breach of any clause in these terms, the hirer's licence becoming invalid, or the hirer using the vehicle in a manner that invalidates insurance cover.

10. Limitation of liability

10.1 ShiftLease's total liability to the hirer under or in connection with this agreement shall not exceed the total hire fees paid in the 12 weeks immediately preceding the event giving rise to the claim.

10.2 ShiftLease is not liable for any indirect or consequential loss including but not limited to loss of earnings, loss of income, or loss of delivery platform account standing.

10.3 Nothing in these terms limits or excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by law.

11. Data and privacy

11.1 ShiftLease collects and processes personal data in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

11.2 By entering into a rental agreement, the hirer consents to ShiftLease processing their personal data for the purposes of administering the rental, managing payments, and complying with legal obligations.

12. Governing law and disputes

12.1 These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales.

12.2 Any disputes arising from or in connection with these terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

12.3 In the event of a dispute, both parties agree to attempt to resolve the matter informally in the first instance by contacting hello@shiftlease.co.uk before commencing any formal proceedings.

13. Amendments

13.1 ShiftLease reserves the right to update these terms at any time. Existing hirers will be given a minimum of 4 weeks written notice of any material changes.

13.2 Continued rental of the vehicle following notification of updated terms constitutes acceptance of those terms.
